There is just something timeless about black and white photographs. It’s different to colour photography as there is more awareness of form and light in the image.
Silver Sheen - A long exposure smoothes the clouds and sea. I love the light picking up the wet side of the sea defences.
Jumbled - A jumble of stone tank traps and broken sea defences.
Sticks and Stone (Black and White) - A monochromatic version of the colour image in the Seascapes gallery.
Heavenly Reflections - Still waters and beautiful reflections of the sky and clouds above.
Riders on the Storm - Horse riders plod along the beach on a stormy day, West Wittering. A nod to the great song by The Doors.
Patterns in the Sand - I love how black and white imagery really enables form and structure to stand out, in this case really highlighting the shape of the ripples pin the sand.
Little and Large - Two parallel sea defences, one dwarfing the other.
Dark Pools - Still, dark pools of water exposed at low tide.
That Sinking Feeling - The battered sea defences sink into the sea.
Under the Weather, Catbells - The truly wonderful Catbells, rising along side Derwent water, getting an absolute drenching. The shot was captured from Latrigg Fell, a wonderful vantage point above Keswick, with a long lens. The small car park at the very top of the road makes access to Latrigg Fell much easier than you would expect. Get there early for a parking space though. Brooding Skies, Catbells - A long lens has compressed the perspective here, enabling me to isolate a small part of the landscape and the dramatic light unfolding amidst the brooding, moody skies.
Changing Light, Catbells - The storm is breaking up and the sun is beginning to shine through the clouds, with light playing its tune along Catbells and the fells behind.
Under the Weather (2) - Very dramatic storm clouds roll over my head as I wander along the beach. Fortunately I escaped getting soaked.
Patterns in Sand (2) - I love how the the standing water picks up the limited light from the sky, highlighting the standing water and making shadows of the ripples in the sand.
Under the Weather (2) - This image was captured at the East Head End of West Wittering beach. Some of the most photogenic clouds I have ever had the privilege to witness bubbled up in front of me. The image is combined of six vertical photographs stitched together as it was too big to fit into one standard sized frame. You can get a sense of the size of the cloud from the two people walking along the beach under the cloud.
Fire in the Sky - Stormy days and drama in the sky.
Snakes and Ladders - The serpentine shape of the sea defences stretch into the distance
Mr Sheen - I love the sheen and the light reflected in the pool of water in the foreground.
Still Waters, Frensham Little Pond (black and white) - A beautifully calm day, with a mirror like lake reflecting the amazing clouds. I have this image printed about 3 feet across under acrylic glass hanging in my office.
Valley of Light - Light breaks through the clouds illuminating Newlands Valley and the fells beyond Catbells.
Reflections, Crummock Water - I am such a sucker for mirror calm lakes! Crummock Water in the Northern Lake District duly obliged here.
Broken - Broken sea defences show the damage done over the years.
Simplicity (2) - No description required. Just a lovely simple clean composition, aided by the contrast between the light on the sea and the darkness of the clouds.
Standing Tall - A lone sea defence stands tall in the face of the elements.
The Calm Before The Storm - Calm pools of water sit quietly whilst the storm begins to brew in the skies above.
The Curve - A curve of shallow water catches the last light of the day.
Scales - The ripples in the sand here remind me of the scales on the skin of a crocodile or alligator.
Erosion - Water flowing back to the sea has eroded the sand leaving a channel of shallow water that catches the light in the sky.
The Channel - I just love these pools of standing water left as the tide goes out. They are usually lovely and calm and so they're wonderful for catching reflections and light.
Crossing the Channel (black and white) - A couple walk along the beach towards the end of a stormy day.
Reunited - The divided stream is reunited once more.
Times Past, Waverley Abbey, Surrey - The remains of the first monastery founded in England by Cistercian monks. I have used a long exposure to try and accentuate the feeling of the passing of time with the movement in the clouds.
Breakthrough (2) - Sunshine begins to break through the clouds and light up the landscape near Keswick, Cumbria.
Millennium Bridge and St Pauls - The iconic bridge and St Pauls Cathedral.
The Old Pier - Swanage harbour and all that remains of the old pier stretches off into the bay.
The Old Pier (2) - An alternative composition of the old pier looking towards Peveril's Point and showing the juxtaposition between the old wooden pier remains and the modern flats and houses along the harbour.
Sunken - The sea defences sink into the clam waters.
Divergence - The two sea defences diverge, with one having weathered the elements significantly better than the other.
Into the Light (3) - I just love these sea defence structures and long exposures as they give a sense of calmness and stillness.
Still Waters, Frensham Little Pond (2) - Another image of a fantastically calm pond with the amazing clouds reflected beautifully in the still waters.
